Places of interest

The Tsemo Gompa :

Also known as the Red Gompa is located at the north of the city. The left side of the entrance has the portrait of Tashi Namgyal. The Gompas has a colossal 2 storey high image of Maitreya which is flanked by Avalokitesvara and Manjusri figures.

Soma Gompa :

This is a new monastery which is situated at old village. The monastery was constructed in 1957 which commemorates the 2500 th birthday of Buddha.

Hemis :

Situated 40 km south of Leh, Hemis Gompas has number of gompas with innumerable Tankhas. The exposition of this tankhas takes place once in eleven years

Tiksey :

As you move 25 km south of Leh, you can capture Tiksey, one of the most impressive monastery in Ladakh. The monastery is beautified with red, white and ochre colour. Tiksey is a 12 storey monastert and has around 10 temples by typical tapeing walls. The temple complex contains number of stupas, wall paintings, tankas, statues.

Leh is a perfect place for all those who are looking for an amazing trekking destination. The most popular of the treks in Leh are - the Markha Valley Trek, Lamayuru-Padam route and the Stok Khangri trek. Mysterious valleys of Suru and Zanskar with their spectacular scenery also are some of the best trekking options in the world.

River Rafting

Indus River provides one of the most breathtaking white water rafting in Himalayas. The view passing through the rafting route is awesome and takes one through the Ladakh Canyons and Zanskar ranges with the views of the various monasteries and gompas located in the river banks. The rapids of Indus falls in the grades of II and I and at some places also III.

How to Reach Leh

Air - Leh is one of the major airport of this region. The airport is linked with direct flights from Delhi, Chandigarh, Srinagar and Jammu. Kargil, Suru and Zanskar valleys - Srinagar and Leh airports are both convenient.

Road - Leh and Srinagar road is open from mid June and November. You will get ordinary and deluxe busses of the Jammu and Kashmir state road transport corporation.. Taxis can also be hired at Srinagar for this trip.
